While usually benign and resolving with migraine treatment, in rare instances, it can signal more serious neurological or retinal conditions, including stroke (AVC) or transient ischemic attack (AIT). Therefore, experiencing a scintillating scotoma for the first time, especially without a history of severe migraines, warrants prompt medical consultation to rule out underlying serious conditions.
