Despite Tick Vaccination, Daniel Koch in Hospital: Are Swiss Vaccination Rules to Blame? 07.07.2026

Former FOPH expert Daniel Koch is hospitalized at Inselspital Bern with meningitis caused by a tick-borne infection (FSME). Koch attributes his illness to the waning effectiveness of his vaccination. While Switzerland only recommends a booster shot every ten years, Germany and Austria advise significantly shorter intervals. The Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) currently sees no reason to adjust the Swiss vaccination schedule, as no new findings have emerged. However, experts emphasize that vaccinations cannot provide 100% protection. Statistics show that antibody levels drop significantly after ten years in certain age groups. Since Switzerland is considered almost entirely a risk area, the debate over optimal booster intervals to prevent severe neurological complications remains highly relevant.
