Microsoft, Google, Amazon say Anthropic Claude remains available to non-defense customers 06.03.2026

TechCrunch

Microsoft, Google, and Amazon have confirmed that Anthropic's Claude AI models will remain accessible to their non-defense sector customers, despite the U.S. Department of Defense designating Anthropic as a supply-chain risk. This designation, announced Thursday, stems from Anthropic's refusal to grant unrestricted access to its technology for applications like mass surveillance and autonomous weapons, which the company deemed unsafe. Microsoft stated its legal review concluded Claude can still be offered through platforms like M365 and GitHub for non-defense projects. Google echoed this, confirming Claude's availability via Google Cloud for non-defense workloads. AWS customers and partners can also reportedly continue using Claude for similar purposes. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei vowed to fight the designation in court, asserting it only applies to direct Department of Defense contracts, not all customer uses.
