„Deutschland-Monitor“: Jeder Fünfte liebäugelt mit starkem Führer und Einheitspartei, im Osten jeder Vierte 19.02.2026

A recent "Deutschland-Monitor" study, surveying approximately 8000 individuals, reveals a significant openness to authoritarian ideas across Germany, with one in five people sympathizing with concepts like a strong leader or a single ruling party. This sentiment is more pronounced in East Germany, where one in four express such leanings. While 98 percent of respondents theoretically support democracy and 89 percent reject dictatorship, satisfaction with the current functioning of democracy stands at only 60 percent nationwide and 51 percent in the East. Researchers attribute this trend to a multitude of perceived challenges and insecurities, particularly in economically disadvantaged regions, leading to increased receptiveness to populist solutions.
