Three 17-year-olds in Groningen, Levi, Sietse, and Thom, are actively opposing the militarization of society, particularly concerning potential conscription and recruitment efforts targeting young people. They express concern that the military is being normalized and presented attractively, masking the reality of combat and its consequences, such as veteran trauma. The teenagers question the necessity of a growing military, arguing that existing NATO strength is sufficient for deterrence and that funds could be better allocated to social and environmental issues. They also highlight ethical concerns regarding the purchase of weapons from Israeli defense companies. While not advocating for the abolition of the military, they propose its use for domestic protection and disaster relief. Their stance is echoed by over a thousand signatories of a manifest against militarism, organized by De Nieuwe Vredesbeweging, which criticizes political rhetoric, the arms race, and the Ministry of Defense's recruitment propaganda.
