Update Nach drei Monaten Aufenthalt: Dobrindt will Asylbewerber schneller in Arbeit bringen 22.02.2026

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt plans to expedite the employment of asylum seekers by allowing them to work after three months of residency, a significant reduction from the current de facto six-month ban. This "immediate work plan" is part of a compromise between the CDU/CSU and SPD parties and aims to integrate individuals into the workforce, with the legal basis to be established within the upcoming implementation of the new Common European Asylum System (GEAS). While the SPD welcomes the move as a long-standing demand for faster integration, the Greens express skepticism, questioning the scope of eligibility and Dobrindt's perceived inconsistency in restricting integration courses while promoting work. The reform, expected to be passed by the Bundestag soon, will not affect the asylum process itself and excludes rejected asylum seekers or those not cooperating with proceedings.
