Doctor warns against energy drinks for children after KwaMashu learner's death 17.06.2026

A 13-year-old Grade 7 pupil from KwaMashu, Mpilo Siyamthanda Shezi, has died after allegedly consuming energy drinks. Dr. Nkosinathi Shabalala has issued a stern warning against energy drink consumption for individuals under 18, citing high caffeine and sugar content. These drinks can strain the cardiovascular system, leading to rapid heartbeat, elevated blood pressure, and irregular heart rhythms, while excessive sugar intake increases the risk of obesity, diabetes, and hypertension. Although Shabalala cautioned against definitively linking the energy drink to the death before a post-mortem, he highlighted the potential for serious health complications and urged parents to prioritize balanced diets, adequate sleep, and proper hydration. The police have opened an inquest into the incident, and the autopsy report is expected to provide clarity.
