Does the SPÖ apply a double standard regarding politicians driving under the influence? 03.07.2026

The SPÖ Burgenland is being accused of applying a double standard regarding politicians driving under the influence. Following the drunk driving incident involving FPÖ mandate holder Norbert Hofer in mid-June, where a blood alcohol level of 2.48 per mille was measured and his driver's license was revoked, the SPÖ demanded his resignation and emphasized a zero-tolerance policy. However, a few weeks later, an SPÖ deputy mayor in southern Burgenland was found sleeping in his car in mid-June with similar levels of intoxication after driving home from a sporting event. This deputy mayor admitted his mistake in the municipal council but has not resigned from his office. SPÖ representatives Roland Fürst and Fritz Radlspäck defend their stance by classifying the cases as incomparable, arguing that Hofer held a more significant political role and that his driving behavior was more dangerous.
