Don't panic when lost in the jungle, use 'STOP' formula - Security expert 03.06.2026

Security expert Major (Rtd) Hairulnizam Samuri advises hikers who become lost in the jungle to immediately implement the 'STOP' formula—Sit, Think, Observe, and Plan—to enhance their chances of rescue. This procedure involves remaining calm, assessing the situation and available resources, and avoiding further disorientation by not walking aimlessly or continuing in the dark. Samuri highlighted common causes of getting lost, including sudden weather changes, group communication failures, fatigue, injuries, and panic, emphasizing the importance of group discipline. He also provided strategies for aiding search-and-rescue operations, such as staying in open areas, using visual and auditory signals, and leaving trail markers, while stressing the necessity of thorough preparation and carrying essential survival equipment.
