DR Congo president hints at extending his term and delaying polls 07.05.2026

Democratic Republic of Congo's President Félix Tshisekedi stated on Wednesday that he might consider a third term in office after his current mandate concludes in 2028, but only if the public approves through a referendum, as the law currently permits a maximum of two terms. He also indicated that the 2028 elections might be postponed due to the ongoing conflict in eastern DR Congo, specifically citing the M23 rebels' control over key areas like Goma and Bukavu. Tshisekedi argued that elections cannot proceed without these regions being secured and blamed neighboring Rwanda for obstructing diplomatic efforts and profiting from the nation's mineral wealth. He also commented on the US sanctions against his predecessor, Joseph Kabila, describing it as a "real mess."
