Draagvlak AOW-plan zoeken en fors bezuinigen: deze ministers moeten aan de bak 23.02.2026

The new Dutch cabinet faces significant challenges in securing support for key policy initiatives, particularly concerning nitrogen reduction, housing, and healthcare. Jaimi van Essen, the new Minister for Agriculture, faces the difficult task of regaining the trust of farmers while implementing substantial nitrogen emission cuts, a policy that will likely lead to a reduction in livestock. Simultaneously, Sophie Hermans, designated Minister of Health, must navigate nearly €10 billion in healthcare cuts, a measure expected to face strong opposition from left-wing parties, the PVV, and BBB, despite the coalition's need for parliamentary majority. The most contentious issue, however, is the proposed acceleration of the AOW (state pension) age increase from 2033, aiming to save €2.7 billion, which has already met fierce resistance from opposition parties and unions who view it as a breach of prior agreements. Hans Vijlbrief, Minister of Social Affairs and Employment, will be at the forefront of this difficult debate.
