Drastische Pläne für Klinikschließungen: Sind 700 deutsche Krankenhäuser „verzichtbar“? 23.02.2026

Josef Hecken, head of Germany's Joint Federal Committee (G-BA), has proposed a significant reduction in the country's hospital landscape, suggesting that approximately 700 of the current 1700 hospitals are "dispensable" and that 1000 hospitals would suffice. This proposal stems from concerns that current hospitalizations can lead to unnecessary treatments, complications, and subsequent transfers to more specialized facilities. Hecken advocates for a specialization of remaining hospitals, ensuring that basic medical care remains accessible within a 30-minute travel time for most people in rural areas. The German government, led by Health Minister Nina Warken, is currently negotiating changes to a hospital reform initiated by Karl Lauterbach, aiming for increased specialization, which may require patients to travel further for care but receive higher quality treatment.
