In Italy, more than 850 out of 4,000 automatic speed cameras have been taken out of service since July 12, a decision by the Ministry of Transport aimed at addressing a 34-year-old legal vacuum. In 1992, a new Highway Code provided for the certification of speed cameras, but no decree detailed the procedure, leaving many devices merely "approved" administratively without technical certification. This loophole has led to a surge in fine challenges, with hearings scheduled through 2028, including 400 for the city of Lecce in Puglia alone.
