EAC unions suspend Thursday strike action 07.07.2026

Trade unions at the Electricity Authority of Cyprus, specifically Epopai, Sidikek, Sepaik, and Sybaik, have suspended their planned strike action for Thursday. This decision follows a Tuesday meeting at the presidential palace involving Energy Minister Michalis Damianos, Deputy Minister Irene Piki, and EAC chairman Giorgos Petrou. Epopai chairman Kyriacos Tafounas stated that unions raised critical concerns regarding electricity supply adequacy and high consumer costs. The parties agreed to reconvene on July 22 to allow the government time to consult other ministries. While the strike is paused, essential safety personnel will remain on duty to maintain stable production. The unions are advocating for the EAC to purchase cheaper electricity from private renewable producers and demanding better energy storage systems to support photovoltaic expansion. The TSO previously warned that the industrial action could have resulted in rolling power cuts.
