On Wednesday, a powerful pair of earthquakes hit Venezuela, killing an unknown but rising number of people and delivering a devastating blow to a country already reeling from political upheaval and crumbling infrastructure. The disaster comes less than six months after former left-wing President Nicolás Maduro was captured by U.S. forces in Caracas and taken to New York on drug-trafficking charges. His ally, Delcy Rodríguez, now serves as interim president, much to the disappointment of opposition supporters who had hoped U.S. President Donald Trump would install opposition leader María Corina Machado.
