East Africa steps up outbreak preparedness 24.07.2026

The East African Community (EAC) launched a regional virology center in Uganda on Wednesday, designating the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) in Entebbe as the EAC Regional Centre of Excellence in Virology. This hub aims to enhance disease surveillance, diagnostics, and knowledge sharing across the eight member states, which have been grappling with recurrent outbreaks of Ebola, Marburg, and other infectious diseases. The launch underscores persistent weaknesses in cross-border coordination, laboratory capacity, and rapid response systems, exacerbated by the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), an EAC member.
