'Economic diplomacy' key in Algeria, French employers' union chief tells RFI 06.05.2026

Patrick Martin, head of France's Medef employers' union, emphasized economic diplomacy following a four-day visit to Algeria aimed at stabilizing relations strained since a 2024 diplomatic rift. He noted that French exports, such as cereals and cattle, have declined as Italy, Germany, and Turkey gain market share, though France remains Algeria's second-largest foreign investor. Martin highlighted economic diplomacy's success in mending ties with China and Morocco, and warned of Chinese predatory pricing in Africa, possibly operating at a loss for state influence. He criticized the "savagery" of global tariff wars, advocating for sensible free trade agreements to protect jobs dependent on exports, with upcoming Africa-France and G7 business forums focused on restoring trade rules.
