Economic slump, not AI, is the real job killer, says LinkedIn executive 13h ago

Blake Lawit, a LinkedIn executive, asserts that the current slump in UK hiring, which has seen a 24% decrease since Covid-19 and a 10% year-on-year decline, is primarily attributed to macroeconomic factors rather than artificial intelligence. He points to rising interest rates post-pandemic as the main suppressor of recruitment, leading to job transition rates at a decade low. Contrary to fears, roles often cited as vulnerable to automation, like marketing and customer service, are not experiencing proportionally larger declines than other sectors. Baroness Minouche Shafik, the Prime Minister's chief economic adviser, echoes this sentiment, stating there is no concrete evidence of widespread AI-induced job losses and advocating for enhanced retraining programs.
