The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) filed a lawsuit against the New York Times on Tuesday, alleging the company violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act by discriminating against a White male employee in promotion decisions. The EEOC claims the longtime editor, with extensive real estate journalism experience, was denied a finalist position for an editorial role last year in favor of an external candidate described as a White female with little relevant experience. EEOC Chair Andrea Lucas stated that all race or sex discrimination is unlawful, with no exception for diversity goals. The New York Times rejected the suit as politically motivated, asserting its merit-based employment practices.
