EFDA Emphasizes Collaboration to Strengthen Food Safety Nationwide 08.06.2026

The Ethiopian Food and Drug Authority (EFDA) has identified unsafe food as a primary cause of illness in Ethiopia, prompting a nationwide call for enhanced collaboration among government bodies, industries, academic institutions, and development partners. Director General Heran Gerba underscored the global impact of unsafe food, citing annual figures of over 866 million illnesses and 1.5 million deaths. Ethiopia contends with diverse food safety issues, including microbial contamination, heavy metals, toxins, and adulteration. The EFDA is shifting focus towards implementing evidence-based solutions, reinforcing regulatory frameworks, and fostering partnerships. Key strategies involve strengthening laboratory capacity, leveraging technology for information sharing, and improving enforcement mechanisms. Clara Silva, WFP Ethiopia Supply Chain Head, highlighted priorities such as deeper partnerships for quality assurance, bolstering fortification capacity, expanding lab reach, and reinforcing food systems from production to consumption, reaffirming WFP's commitment to reducing foodborne diseases.
