Eight years on, Akramul’s widow refuses to give up fight for justice 03.06.2026

Eight years after the killing of her husband, former Teknaf councilor Akramul Haque, Ayesha Begum remains steadfast in her pursuit of justice. Akramul was killed on May 26, 2018, during an anti-narcotics operation in Teknaf, allegedly in a staged gunfight. Ayesha's release of audio recordings capturing the events, including her own screams and a poignant conversation between Akramul and his daughter, brought national attention to the case and the issue of extrajudicial killings. Despite financial hardship and raising two daughters alone, Ayesha's resolve has been fueled by the hope for justice. Following political changes in August 2024, authorities have reopened the case, with the International Crimes Tribunal Chief Prosecutor ordering a review. Suspects, including former lawmaker Abdur Rahman Bodi who was arrested and jailed on July 20, 2025, have been identified, with investigators believing Akramul was targeted for speaking out against local corruption.
