Eklat auf Berlinale: Merz-Minister stürmt wegen Gaza-Rede aus Saal 22.02.2026

During the Berlinale film festival on Saturday evening, February 21st, German Federal Environment Minister Carsten Schneider (SPD) walked out of an awards ceremony in protest of a speech given by Palestinian-Syrian director Abdallah Alkhatib. Alkhatib, who received an award for his debut film "Chronicles from the Siege," accused the German government of being a "partner in genocide in Gaza." A ministry spokesperson stated that Schneider found these remarks unacceptable. Alkhatib's film explores the experiences of Palestinian refugees and the siege of cities where they suffer under occupation. The incident occurred amidst broader criticism from over 80 filmmakers, including stars like Javier Bardem and Tilda Swinton, who had previously criticized the Berlinale's perceived silence on the Gaza conflict.
