Electoral entities warn of budgetary deficiencies ahead of upcoming regional and municipal elections 07.07.2026

The heads of JNE, ONPE, and Reniec issued an alert this Tuesday regarding serious budgetary deficiencies that jeopardize the Regional and Municipal Elections in October. The president of JNE, Roberto Burneo, denounced a deficit of S/589.52 million and warned that, if funds are not received, the terms of current authorities could be extended. For its part, ONPE requires S/433.21 million to cover operating expenses, the production of electoral materials, and the hiring of personnel for its 125 decentralized offices. Likewise, the head of Reniec, Carmen Velarde, denounced financial asphyxiation due to the MEF withholding collected resources, which affects the updating of the electoral roll and the delivery of electronic DNI. The lack of liquidity in these institutions threatens the planning and operational capacity necessary to guarantee a transparent and efficient electoral process in the country.
