SIR 3rd phase for 23 states, 6 UTs unlikely to start in April 9h ago

The third and final phase of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, initially slated for April, is now unlikely to commence before June due to the ongoing 16th census exercise. Booth Level Officers (BLOs), critical for electoral roll revision, are also heavily involved in the census, creating a manpower overlap and logistical challenges for enumerators. This postponement follows previous phases of the SIR that encountered difficulties, including litigation, political opposition, and issues with roll documentation in West Bengal, leading to schedule changes and extensions in several states and Union Territories. The Election Commission of India had previously advised chief electoral officers to complete preparatory work for an April start, but the census's commencement on April 1 has disrupted these plans.
