Electric motorbike teen detained for killing gran on zebra crossing 15.05.2026

Billy Stokoe, an 18-year-old, has been sentenced to nearly seven years in youth detention for causing the death of 86-year-old Gloria Stephenson by dangerous driving. The incident occurred in May 2025 in Sunderland when Stokoe, while under the influence of cannabis and using his mobile phone, collided with Mrs. Stephenson on a zebra crossing. Dashcam footage showed Stokoe, wearing a balaclava, fleeing the scene after hitting the victim. He later ditched the non-road-legal electric motorbike, changed his clothes, and was eventually taken to the police by his mother. Prosecutors revealed Stokoe was three times over the cannabis driving limit and had been using his phone for a significant distance prior to the crash. The victim's family expressed their profound anger and disappointment with the sentence, highlighting Stokoe's lack of remorse and the illegal nature of the bike.
