Emergency warnings to rely on sirens and SMS for those without smartphones 18h ago

Cyprus's newly launched nationwide emergency warning system, CY Alert, will utilize Cell Broadcast technology to send real-time alerts directly to mobile devices, bypassing silent settings and internet requirements. This system, officially presented by the interior and deputy research ministries, aims to reach all smartphone users, including those on older compatible devices that support Cell Broadcast. To address concerns about reaching elderly residents in remote areas or those without smartphones, authorities have emphasized that CY Alert will be complemented by traditional sirens and direct SMS messaging, forming a multi-layer approach. The system is expected to be fully operational next week, with public testing scheduled between June 2 and June 15, and a support line, 1450, available for technical assistance.
