Emphasis on Ecology and the EU, Špidla's New Social Democracy Applies for Registration 08.06.2026

Former Prime Minister and Social Democrat Miloš Špidla has submitted an application to the Ministry of the Interior for the registration of his new political party, Nová sociální demokracie (NSD). The party, which began collecting signatures on May 1, is positioning itself as a new left-wing political home for supporters of social democratic ideas and former members of SOCDEM who disagreed with its alliance with the hnutí Stačilo! (Enough! movement) and KSČM. NSD aims to advocate for a socially just society with an emphasis on ecology, prosperity, European integration, and collective defense. Among the party's priorities are the protection of democracy, the rule of law, decent wages, affordable housing, strong public services, and fair taxation. Špidla expects registration by the end of June, followed by an inaugural congress, and he himself will not seek the leadership position. The party plans to consider running candidates in the autumn municipal and possibly Senate elections.
