Britain has limited means to fight back after years of underinvestment 11d ago

The United Kingdom faces significant limitations in its ability to respond to escalating tensions with Iran, particularly after a British base in Cyprus was drawn into the conflict. Despite deployments like Typhoon warplanes to Qatar and F-35 jets to RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus, these assets have limited ammunition and are not ideal for intercepting drones, being designed for more sophisticated threats. While the army has drone-countering ground troops, they failed to stop a drone at RAF Akrotiri on Sunday night. The UK's capacity to counter Iran's ballistic missiles is also constrained, relying on the US for protection, as only three of the Royal Navy's six Type 45 destroyers are available, and none are believed to be in the region. This precarious situation stems from decades of underinvestment in defense, leaving the UK with insufficient means to defend its interests and citizens across the Middle East.
