Canon wants to make zooms more compact. But what is a catadioptric lens? 7d ago

Canon has filed a patent with the Japan Patent Office (Patent 2026-033938) for new catadioptric zoom lenses designed for full-frame cameras, including models such as a 28-45mm f/1.2, 28-55mm f/1.4, and 35-70mm f/1.4. This old-school optical system, also known as mirror lenses, utilizes both refractive glass and reflective surfaces to shorten the light path to the sensor, enabling more compact designs, a feature typically seen in long telephoto primes. While historically these lenses have drawbacks like donut bokeh and lower sharpness, Canon may be developing ways to overcome these issues for potential use in newer EOS models or a new compact camera with a fixed mirror lens, though patents do not guarantee product release.
