France to boost nuclear arsenal and extend deterrence to European allies 11d ago

France is significantly enhancing its nuclear defense policy by boosting its nuclear arsenal and extending its deterrent to eight European allies, including the UK, Germany, Poland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Greece, Sweden, and Denmark. President Emmanuel Macron announced these changes, citing an increasingly unstable strategic environment and predicting the next 50 years will be an era of nuclear weapons. The French nuclear warhead count will increase from approximately 300, with a new nuclear-armed submarine, The Invincible, set to launch in 2036. This "advanced deterrence" strategy allows partner countries to participate in French air-launched nuclear capacity exercises and host French nuclear bombers, while also sharing in the development of auxiliary capacities like space-based alarm systems and advanced air defense. This marks the most substantial shift in French strategic thinking since 1960, though France retains sole decision-making power over nuclear missile deployment.
