From Lady Gaga to Coldplay: 5 times conservative Islamic groups have ‘canceled’ major events in Indonesia (or tried to) 3d ago

Conservative Islamic groups in Indonesia have repeatedly protested and, in some cases, successfully canceled or relocated major international events, citing concerns over morality, religious values, and national identity. These protests have targeted prominent figures and organizations, including Lady Gaga's 2012 "Born This Way Ball" concert in Jakarta, which was ultimately canceled due to threats from groups like the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) and a denial of permits. Similarly, the Miss World 2013 finals were moved from Bogor to Bali amid objections. More recently, Indonesia lost its hosting rights for the FIFA U-20 World Cup in May 2023 after provincial governors and conservative groups protested the participation of the Israeli team. The British band Coldplay is currently facing similar opposition for their November 15, 2023 concert in Jakarta from the group Persaudaraan Alumni (PA) 212, who allege the band supports LGBT and atheist movements.
