House panel warns about Chinese use of space sites in Latin America 11d ago

A U.S. House Select Committee on China report, "Pulling Latin America into China's Orbit," released on February 26, warns that China has established at least 11 space facilities across Latin America, including ground stations, radio telescopes, and satellite laser ranging sites in Argentina, Venezuela, Bolivia, Chile, and Brazil. These facilities, presented as scientific cooperation, are part of an integrated network that enhances China's People's Liberation Army's surveillance and intelligence capabilities, allowing for improved satellite monitoring, tracking, and global data collection. The committee highlights the Deep Space Station in Argentina, operational since 2018 under a 50-year lease, as an example of this expansion, urging NASA to review cooperation with host countries to comply with the Wolf Amendment and prevent loopholes in space sector agreements.
