Iran World Cup place in US put in doubt by Middle East conflict. Iraq next in line 11d ago

Iran's participation in the men's soccer World Cup, scheduled to begin in three months, is uncertain due to escalating Middle East conflict involving the United States, a co-host. Iran is slated to play its group stage matches in Inglewood, California, and Seattle from June 15-26. Recent coordinated attacks by the U.S. and Israel on Iran, which resulted in the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other officials, provoked an Iranian missile response targeting U.S. allies like Qatar and Saudi Arabia. Iran's top soccer official, Mehdi Taj, expressed doubt about looking forward to the World Cup, and it remains unclear if Iran will refuse to send its team or if the U.S. will block their entry. FIFA has stated it will monitor developments, while a White House official seemed unconcerned. Should Iran withdraw, it would forfeit significant prize money and face FIFA fines and potential exclusion from future World Cups, with Iraq or the UAE being potential replacements.
