Khamenei's killing sparks concerns over prolonged regional chaos 3d ago

Supreme Leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, born in 1939 and in power since 1989, has died following large-scale attacks on Iran's military facilities and officials initiated on Saturday by the United States and Israel. The U.S. stated its objective was to eliminate imminent threats, while Israel described its strike as preemptive. The Israeli military reported an "extensive attack" involving approximately 200 fighter jets in western and central Iran. Iran's Nour News confirmed Khamenei's death on Sunday morning, stating he died while carrying out his duties, with his daughter, son-in-law, grandchild, and one daughter-in-law also killed. The Iranian cabinet declared 40 days of national mourning, and officials have vowed severe retaliation against the U.S. and Israel.
