Macron says France will allow temporary deployment of nuclear-armed jets to European allies 11d ago

French President Emmanuel Macron announced a significant update to France's nuclear deterrence doctrine during a speech at L’Ile Longue, a military base in northwestern France. The new strategy will permit the temporary deployment of French strategic air forces to allied countries, though decision-making authority for nuclear weapon use will remain solely with the French president. Macron also revealed plans to increase France's nuclear warhead count from its current level of below 300, marking the first such escalation since at least 1992. These changes are intended to bolster European security amid growing doubts about U.S. commitments and have initiated discussions with nations including Britain, Germany, Poland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Greece, Sweden, and Denmark.
