Macron says France will increase size of its nuclear arsenal 3d ago

French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Monday that France will increase the size of its nuclear arsenal and bolster its deterrent capabilities, citing a period of geopolitical upheaval and an increasing risk of conflicts crossing the nuclear threshold. Speaking from a submarine base in Brittany on March 2, Macron stated that a "hardening" of France's deterrence model is necessary due to global instability. Concurrently, Iran's Ambassador to the IAEA, Reza Najafi, alleged that U.S. and Israeli airstrikes targeted the Natanz enrichment facility, a claim contradicted by IAEA chief Rafael Grossi, who stated the agency has "no indication" that nuclear facilities have been hit. The broader conflict saw Iran launching missile and drone attacks across the Gulf and hitting a British base in Cyprus, while the U.S. reported three service members killed and vowed retaliation.
