Majority of women unaware menopause can trigger new mental illness 4d ago

A recent YouGov poll commissioned by the Royal College of Psychiatrists reveals that a staggering four in five adults in the UK are unaware that menopause can trigger new mental illnesses, with only 21% of adult women possessing this knowledge. While 81% of people associate menopause with hot flushes, and significant percentages with mood changes and reduced sex drive, the link to serious mental health conditions remains largely unrecognized. Peri-menopausal women face a 40% higher risk of depression, a risk exacerbated by hormonal fluctuations, sleep disruption, and a lack of awareness among women and healthcare professionals, leading to delayed support. The Royal College of Psychiatrists advocates for improved care, mandatory menopause education in medical training, and workplace policies to address this societal issue.
