Thomas R., convicted of the 2022 murder of American student Mieke Oort in Leeuwarden, has died by suicide in prison. The case, dubbed the "Tinder murder" as the victim and perpetrator met on the dating app, involved R. firebombing Oort's apartment and fatally stabbing her after she began dating someone else. R. also injured Oort's boyfriend during the March 6, 2022 attack. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison and psychiatric treatment. The news of his suicide, reported by Leeuwarder Courant and Dagblad van het Noorden, has evoked a "wave of emotions" for Oort's loved ones, with their lawyer Sébas Diekstra describing it as a "painful, tragic, and above all, unnecessary turn of events."
