Massive earthquake jolts Kolkata, tremors felt across city 27.02.2026

Kolkata experienced a significant earthquake on Friday afternoon at approximately 1:22 pm IST, with tremors felt widely across the city and surrounding districts near the India-Bangladesh border. The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) reported a magnitude of 5.5 on the Richter scale, with the epicenter located 10 km deep in southwestern Bangladesh. The US Geological Survey (USGS) initially registered a magnitude of 5.3, placing the epicenter 26 km southeast of Taki, West Bengal. Residents reported furniture trembling and ceiling fans swaying, with some individuals rushing out of buildings in panic. Authorities have not yet confirmed any damage or casualties resulting from the seismic event.
