Middle East turmoil constrains China, a crucial backer of Iran and major buyer of its oil 7d ago

China is facing significant geopolitical and economic challenges due to the escalating turmoil in the Middle East, particularly following US and Israeli strikes against Iran. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi condemned these actions as "unacceptable," especially the assassination of a sovereign leader, and the foreign ministry confirmed the death of a Chinese national in Tehran, prompting an urgent call for citizens to evacuate Iran. As the world's largest oil importer, China's energy security is directly threatened by potential disruptions to maritime traffic, with approximately half of its oil supply passing through the Strait of Hormuz, which is currently blocked by Tehran. Iran itself is a crucial energy partner, accounting for 13.4% of China's seaborne oil imports. This instability also affects another regime friendly to Beijing, following a similar destabilization event in Venezuela.
