Refugee status becomes temporary in asylum shake-up 7d ago

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has announced a significant overhaul of the UK's asylum system, introducing temporary protection for individuals granted refugee status. Effective Monday for new adult and accompanied child asylum claims, this policy change, implemented by altering existing rules without a parliamentary vote, mandates case reviews every 30 months, potentially leading to return to their country of origin if deemed safe. This contrasts with current rules offering five years' protection for existing claimants and unaccompanied children, with longer-term policies under consideration for the latter. The reforms, inspired by Denmark's stricter approach, aim to deter illegal migration by making the UK a less attractive destination, though they have drawn criticism from within Labour for mirroring right-wing rhetoric and from the Refugee Council for potential integration and employment difficulties for refugees. Mahmood asserts these changes are "existential" for the country, addressing a perceived lack of border control and its impact on public trust.
