A new, unprecedentedly detailed image of the Milky Way's heart has been released by the European Southern Observatory, captured by a telescope in Chile's Atacama Desert. This massive image, the largest ever from the ALMA antenna network, showcases swirling clouds of cold, star-forming gases spanning over 650 light-years across. These gas and dust clouds encircle the supermassive black hole at the galaxy's center, a region known as the Central Molecular Zone. Astronomers, led by Steve Longmore of Liverpool John Moores University, aim to study star birth in this extreme environment to better understand galactic evolution. The image reveals details previously invisible to the human eye.
