The EU Commission prepares for the effects of the US and Israeli war on Iran: focus on security and energy 11d ago

The European Commission, led by Ursula von der Leyen, convened a "security college" on March 2, 2024, to address the potential repercussions of the US and Israeli conflict with Iran. The EU executive's action plan prioritizes supporting member states and safeguarding citizens from adverse consequences. This includes bolstering evacuation and repatriation efforts via the EU Civil Protection Mechanism and the Emergency Response Coordination Centre. Particular focus is placed on the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea, critical trade routes for 20% of global oil supplies, where the EU's ASPIDES mission is already active. The Commission is also intensifying monitoring of airlines and shipping companies, and has established an energy task force to address skyrocketing oil prices. Internally, heightened vigilance and cooperation with Europol are maintained to counter security risks, alongside preparations for potential increases in migrant arrivals.
