Trump installs Christopher Columbus statue on White House grounds 8h ago

President Donald Trump's administration has installed a replica of a Christopher Columbus statue on the grounds of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, adjacent to the White House. This marble statue, created by sculptor Will Hemsley, is a replacement for one that was toppled and thrown into Baltimore's Inner Harbor in July 2020 during nationwide protests against institutional racism and following the death of George Floyd. The White House stated that Columbus is considered a hero and will be honored for generations, with John Pica of Italian American Organizations United, the statue's owner, expressing delight in its protected placement. This action reflects Trump's traditional view of Columbus as a pivotal figure in European colonization, contrasting with the recent shift by some to recognize Indigenous Peoples Day.
