Weifang physician left a legacy of care, compassion 11d ago

Dr. Zhang Junqiao, a 38-year-old deputy chief physician from Weifang, Shandong province, China, died on June 15 in Tanzania while heroically saving a woman from drowning near Dar es Salaam. Zhang, who was leading the 27th Chinese medical aid team providing anesthesia services and training at Muhimbili National Hospital, was known for his profound compassion and dedication to service, both in China and abroad. Colleagues remember his selfless acts, including financial assistance and making clothes for a friend's child, and his commitment to public health education, exemplified by his "street stall doctor" initiative teaching CPR. He cofounded Weifang's Heartbeat Action volunteer service team in 2020, emphasizing free aid over financial gain, and his ethos of service extended to covering medical expenses for an impoverished child in Tanzania. His final social media post expressed pride in his profession and country, and his legacy continues through the renamed Junqiao Heartbeat Action service team, which aims to increase CPR awareness.
