E.ON's Raffel: Quickly removing grid bottlenecks can cut total wholesale market price by 40 pct in 10 years 03.06.2026

Eliminating grid bottlenecks in Romania could lead to a substantial 40% reduction in the wholesale energy price over the next decade, with over half of this decrease potentially realized within four to five years, according to E.ON Romania CEO Volker Raffel. Speaking at the Eurelectric Power Summit 2026, Raffel highlighted that Romania's current wholesale price of €135/MWh is significantly higher than in Spain (€45/MWh) and Germany (€90/MWh). He stressed the importance of tariff structure reform, advocating for a capacity component to encourage efficient reservation and use of grid resources, noting that the current consumption-based payment model leads to free capacity reservation and blocked resources. Raffel also mentioned €100 million in EU funding for the CARMEN project, a Dynamic Line Rating initiative aimed at improving grid capacity utilization in Southeastern Europe, and underscored the need for both public and private investment in grid modernization.
