Escalation of doctors' strike: hospitals without doctors in several cities 07.07.2026

Since July 7, 2026, the Democratic Republic of the Congo has been undergoing a major health crisis due to the escalation of the doctors' strike. Led by the National Union of Doctors (SYNAMED), the "Hospitals without doctors" operation imposes a total work stoppage until July 16, 2026, aimed at forcing the government to respect the terms of the agreement signed three years ago. This intensification follows a movement that began on June 24, which was initially limited to emergency services. While emergency departments and blood banks remain operational, the paralysis is affecting Kinshasa and Kwilu, whereas North Kivu, South Kivu, and Ituri are spared due to armed conflict and Ebola. This situation is causing concern among the population, particularly in Bandundu, where a cholera outbreak threatens to exacerbate patient vulnerability.
