Ethiopia, Finland Seek to Deepen Economic Cooperation, Bilateral Engagement 03.06.2026

Ethiopia and Finland convened high-level political consultations in Addis Ababa on June 3, 2026, to deepen bilateral engagement and economic cooperation. This meeting marked the resumption of formal political talks after a 16-year hiatus, highlighting a longstanding commitment to strengthening ties that date back to the 1950s. Ambassador Meles Alem of Ethiopia emphasized the mutual alignment of Finland's focus on private sector investment with Ethiopia's reform agenda, presenting Ethiopia as an attractive investment destination and a gateway to Africa. He also noted successful cooperation in land management, education, and climate action, referencing Ethiopia's Green Legacy Initiative. The Finnish delegation, led by Outi Holopainen, expressed satisfaction with Ethiopia's transformation and underscored the need for sustained dialogue amidst global challenges. Both nations reaffirmed their commitment to advancing trade, investment, and cooperation in education, peace mediation, and people-to-people exchanges, recognizing Ethiopia's role in regional stability.
