EU lawmakers call for probe of FIFA boss over Trump contact before US-Belgium match 07.07.2026

Dozens of European lawmakers are mobilizing to launch an investigation within the European Parliament regarding FIFA President Gianni Infantino. The controversy stems from FIFA's decision to lift the suspension of U.S. striker Folarin Balogun, allowing him to play in a match against Belgium despite receiving a red card during the previous game against Bosnia-Herzegovina on July 1. Lawmakers Barry Andrews, Lara Wolters, and Niels Fuglsang claim that U.S. President Donald Trump intervened with Infantino to overturn the penalty, calling the mid-tournament rule change a "perversion of justice." The group is urging EU national football associations to prompt the FIFA Ethics Committee to investigate potential breaches of political neutrality. This inquiry aims to determine if political pressure influenced the disciplinary decision and to address other concerns, such as the awarding of the FIFA Peace Prize to Trump.
