The European Union has announced a significant aid package of over 80 million euros to address the escalating humanitarian crisis in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (RDC) and the broader Great Lakes region. Of this total, 68 million euros will be dedicated to providing humanitarian assistance within the RDC, which has been plagued by over three decades of severe violence, exacerbated by the resurgence of the M23 group in 2021. An additional 13.2 million euros will support regional refugee aid and disaster preparedness initiatives. This announcement coincides with a visit by the European Commissioner for Crisis Management, Hadja Lahbib, to the RDC, Burundi, and Rwanda to assess urgent needs and advocate for humanitarian access.
